Step 1: The beginning. One way to immediately separate yourself from the pack is to address your student cover letter to the person advertising the position. Forget “To Whom It May Concern”, forget “Dear Sir/MS” – that’s what everyone else is going to write. If the job advertisement doesn’t mention a name, do some investigation. Ring the company or recruitment agency and ask for a name to address the letter to. It may take a little bit more time, but it will be well worth it when your cover letter is on the top of the pile. Your first paragraph should focus on introducing yourself and mentioning what job it is that you’re applying for. Most jobs these days are advertised through recruitment agencies that advertise thousands of jobs at once, so it’s important to make it clear exactly which position you’re applying for.

Step 2: The middle. Your student cover letter should be no longer than a page, and ideally, no longer than three paragraphs. Once you’ve written your first, introductory paragraph, the second paragraph should focus on your experience. What makes you right for this role? Mention any RECENT experience that may be relevant – don’t dig back through your resume and mention a job you held ten years ago. If you don’t have any specific experience in a similar job role, mention any skills or education you may have that is relevant to the role. The second paragraph is where you really sell yourself, so make it count.

Step 3: The end. I like to make the last paragraph a bit personal. Mention any hobbies you may have (make sure they are employer friendly, don’t include any strange or offensive hobbies), and any character traits you think may make you attractive to the employer. Mention whether or not you have transport to get to the position (employers love to hear that you own your own car, it makes you seem much more reliable), and when you’re able to start the role. Finally, it’s time to end the letter. You have a few options here – the tried and true “Yours sincerely” or “Yours truly”, or you can try something a little different, perhaps “Looking forward to working with you in future”. It’s the little touches that count, and once again, something like that will make you stand out in the employer’s mind.

Let your experience sell you, not your artistic efforts.

2. While we’re on the appearance of your letter, one of the most common mistakes people make is spelling, grammar and presentation. Make sure you know how to spell the words you’re using (or use a spellchecker) and make sure you know what they mean. It’s all well and good to use long, impressive words – but you’ll look stupid if it comes out that you have no idea what they mean. Get someone else to read over your final product before you send it off to help pick up any mistakes you may have missed.

3. Another common mistake people make with cover letters is that they just regurgitate their resume. Pick and choose one or two key roles that you have had in the past that you think will make you stand out, and stick to those. If your employer wants to know more, they will go to your resume for the details. A cover letter needs to be succinct and to the point, not a rambling diary of all the jobs you’ve had over the past ten years.

4. Don’t be too generic. Surprise the employer with a bit of knowledge about their company – Google is your friend here. Make it known why you want to work for them – even if this is just a stop-gap job for you, don’t let them know that. Treat every job and cover letter as though it’s the career path you’ve been shooting for your whole life, and make them believe it.

5. Finally, the last mistake that people commonly make is being too modest. The job market is no place for modesty, it’s highly competitive and if you don’t sing your praises, no one else will do it for you. Make your strengths known – you know what they are. Make your personality shine through in the letter and be confident in your abilities.

Doing this will give your letter a little individual touch and help the reader connect with you, without overstepping the boundary between formal and sloppy.

4. Make sure your spelling and grammar is spot on. Why would your future boss want to hire someone who’s too lazy to hit that little spellcheck button after they’ve typed up their letter? Sometimes, it’s the little things that count, and poor spelling and dodgy grammar will put even the keenest employer off.

It is important that the format you use should be Times New Roman, Font size 11. This is the industry default and is considered very readable and looks good. You can also use Arial.

Second: The layout
